A State of Mind
Synopsis from Netflix: Two young North Korean gymnasts prepare for an unprecedented competition in this documentary that offers a rare look into the communist society and the daily lives of North Korean families.
A very eye-opening, interesting documentary! I really enjoyed it. These two girls are participating in the Mass Games- this enormous show of gymnastics, dancing, and basically love of North Korea's triumphs and leaders: Kim Jong-il and Kim Il-sung. The film documented the girls' daily lives, the family dynamics, how closed off North Korea really is, and how everything they do revolves around Communism and their love of their two leaders. Then on top of all of that it shows how intense and serious they take these Mass Games. I wish I could actually see a Mass Game all the way through. Every performance is synchronized so that everyone works as one. There are thousands of girls flipping at the same time, so that if one girl fell, she would ruin the entire dance. I've been in musicals in high school, so I know how tough it is to pull something like that off. While I don't agree with North Korea's practices, I have a lot of respect for these performers. I highly recommend this film to anyone that was ever curious about North Korea and can appreciate good choreography.
